Fort Collins Nursery Gothic
Gary Eastman and Kathy Reid in one of their more stoic moments.

Reprinted from the Fort Collins Coloradoan

Fort Collins is lucky to have many businesses that work hard at attending to good customer service. But at some time, we've all had a similar experience looking for a specific item--and also looking for someone to help us find it. The first employee we ask says,"This is my first day; I don't know." We find a second employee who says, "Oh that is in Aisle 22--Joe's back there." We find Aisle 22; Joe's not around and the merchandise there doesn't begin to resemble the item we seek.
We are casualties of a lack of atttentivness, Character Fort Collins' focus quality for June.
Character Fort Collins, a non-profit organization seeking to reinforce good character throughout the commmunity, identifies a positive trait each month. The above scenario isn't likely to happen at Fort Collins Nursery, run by Gary Eastman and Kathy Reid. Typical of many businesses in our town, they have chosen their staff carefully and trained them not only in their products, but also in customer appreciation and service. The staff knows whom to call if a customer asks something they don't know. Gary and Kathy won't have it any other way. They take pride in quality service, rooted in attentiveness.
It's been that way from the beginning. Eastman and a partner bought the nursery business in 1976. The wholesale and growing operation is run by Eastman's partner while Eastman assumes management duties of the retail nursery business with Reid's able help.
He got into the business because he loved the outdoors and gardening, loved learning about plants, and wanted to share his passions with others. Thus, he sees himself not only as a manager, but also as a teacher. He wants his customers to learn to love being outdoors and to find contentment in gardening. He wants folks to wake up saying, "Oh boy, let's go buy some flowers," rather than, "Oh, gee, we have to get the flowers today."
Reid first joined the nursery staff in 1984 (she and Gary married in 1998). Her interests and personality made her fit right into the attentiveness mode. Perhaps her best skill is her ability to listen and sort out what the customer really wants to acheive. (For the occasional difficult customer, she listens until she isolates the real problem.)
She works hard at this because she believes attentiveness, as a primary business value, is disappearing.
Eastman and Reid are also attentive to their staff. They have a number of longtime employees who come back year after year in their "nursery family."
Friday night dinners at the Rio or barbecues in someone's back yard are regular events, and holidays are special ones. Eastman and Reid see our community from a perspective different from other businesses.
They see Fort Collins losing some intimacy as it grows and they work hard to maintain a personal connection that is consistent with a friendly community.
They gain great satisfaction in helping their customers make the community greener and more colorful, peaceful and vibrant.
